Visions of the Shakers: A Historical and Photographic Journey

Visions of the Shakers: A Historical and Photographic Journey

This is a virtual presentation. Please click here to register.

The Shaker origins in the United States began outside of Albany, New York and today the last remaining members are in Sabbathday Lake, Maine. Interweaving the history of this fascinating Protestant Utopian sect with his photography, Chelmsford resident Bruce Magnuson will follow their development and influence from the 1700's until today.  He will also be highlighting the Shaker villages in Eastern New York and New England with many still in existence as museums.

Bio:

After retiring from a career in Financial Services, Bruce has pursued his interests in photography, art, and history.   He has had photographs in multiple shows at the Griffin Museum in Winchester and various other venues including the Chelmsford library, and one featuring his infrared photographs at the Acton Library.
He has presented a wide variety of topics ranging from international affairs, social justice, art, photography, and the history of his home region the Hudson River Valley.  This presentation on the Shakers is a variation on some of those themes, some local history, some art history and a lot of photography!
