VIRTUAL: Great American Unsung Heroes Who Changed The Course Of History -- Juanita Moody

**PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A VIRTUAL PROGRAM THAT WILL TAKE PLACE VIA ZOOM. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Webinar via email.**

Retired Massachusetts Superior Court Justice Dennis Curran is excited to continue his "Great American Unsung Heroes Who Changed The Course Of History" series.

This month, learn about Juanita Moody, the National Security Analyst who helped save America from nuclear disaster. Early in 1962, Moody, working as a codebreaker and intelligence analyst for the NSA, discovered that the Russians were installing nuclear missiles in Cuba, aimed at the United States. She pleaded with her superiors to send her findings to the White House, the State Department and the military. They refused. She persisted. And finally, her NSA report was distributed to the wider intelligence community. The White House was alarmed at what they saw. The Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962 was suddenly upon us. During that crisis, Ms. Moody supervised NSA's day-to-day -- sometimes, minute-by-minute response. She frequently gave impromptu briefings to high-level civilian and military leaders. She often worked around the clock, grabbing only a few hours of sleep on a cot in her office. Moody revolutionized intelligence reporting, and put the NSA into the White House Situation Room. She was a true patriot, and the first recipient of our nation’s National Intelligence Medal of Achievement, presented by then-Director of Central Intelligence George H. W. Bush, and later inducted into the NSA Hall of Honor.

Dennis J. Curran served as a Massachusetts judge for 16 years, including in the Superior Court from 2006 to 2018. Prior to his time on the bench, Curran worked as an Assistant District Attorney and First Assistant Legal Counsel to the Governor, in addition to work in private practice. A graduate of Boston Latin School, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Virginia School of Law, Curran has taught law at Tufts University, Roger Williams University School of Law, and Brown University.
